My son Caleb has been with Ms. Joy for over 2 years. We found her by accident and we are so blessed to have found her! When Caleb (age 11) started lessons with Ms. Joy, his dyslexia was very severe. He struggled with every word he would try to read. It would take 30 minutes to read just one page of a kindergarten level reader. Slowly, but surely, over the next two years, Caleb would grow so much in his reading abilities. He would sometimes seem to have setbacks and other times – seem to forget everything he learned. But Ms. Joy never gave up on him. Now he can read his 6th grade level school work! He still struggles some, but the improvements are incredible. Ms. Joy was encouraging when Caleb wanted to give up. She would smile and laugh and play games and hooray! when he would get the right answers. His confidence has tripled! I, as Caleb’s mom am grateful for all the work and investment Ms. Joy has put into my son’s learning. As a homeschool mom, stuck in a school district that offered no help for my son because of his age, I am so thankful to have found such a dedicated and knowledgeable tutor that forever has helped my son. Thank you Ms. Joy from both Caleb and myself.

Basic Facts About the English Writing System
Understanding the English writing system involves more than just knowing your ABCs. Here are some key facts about how it works: Alphabet: English has 26 letters—21 consonants and 5/6 vowels (Y can sometimes act as a vowel). Phonemes: There are 44 distinct sounds that represent the 26 letters of the alphabet. Syllable Types: English uses 6 common syllable patterns for arranging vowels and consonants in words. Phoneme Predictability: About 20% of English phonemes have predictable spellings, 50% of words follow regular patterns, and 37% deviate by just one sound. — Moats, 1995.
“Reading, much like the radio, is a human invention born of insight and innovation.”- Mark Seidenberg
At Reading with Ms. Joy, I draw inspiration from this idea by employing an innovative approach to teaching reading that is firmly grounded in the Science of Reading.
